DERMAPLANING: POST-TREATMENT CARE

DERMAPLANING: POST-TREATMENT CARE

Dermaplaning requires no down-time, therefore you can resume to your daily schedule as normal. It may be considered a “lunch-time facial”, so you may go back to work if you need.

There is possibility you can cause injury to the skin if aftercare instructions are not followed and taken seriously. As with any professional treatment, there are rules to stick to after.

To ensure your skin remains healthy and happy, please do follow the below post-treatment care.

1. Avoid direct sun exposure for the immediate 48-72 hours post dermaplaning.

The outer layer of skin, the epidermis, acts as a waterproof barrier and protects the below layers of skin from exposure to the outside world. The layer of dead skin cells which builds up is what we remove during dermaplaning.

This protective layer of dead skin cells, is no longer after dermaplaning. Only healthy cells are now exposed, this means the body views this as a form of trauma and its reaction is to protect.

Dermaplaning is a form of exfoliation, we remove dead skin cells. The body freaks out and more skin cells are made. Collagen and elastin fibres are produced, this prolongs ageing.

We promote the production of constituents that give us plump, full skin as we have tricked the body in removing what it views as the first line of defense. We have removed the skin cells containing excess pigmentation and devoid the appearance of “glowing” skin.

2. Put your sunscreen on everyday!

A broad-spectrum physical sunscreen (one containing zinc in particular) is recommended, this means it protects us from both UVA and UVB rays.

To remember the difference easy, UV-Aging vs UV-Burning. UVA rays cause cellular damage which ages the skin and UVB rays cause cellular damage which burns the skin.

We do not recommend sunscreens that you can purchase from the supermarket. They may contain synthetic chemical ingredients and break down the moment they are exposed to heat.

After your dermaplaning treatment, we will always apply our in-store ‘My Sunshine’ natural sunscreen to protect, nourish and repair your skin. ‘My Sunshine’ contains no nasty chemicals and is made in New Zealand.

3. Discontinue the use of any exfoliants for one week.

Cleansers, serums or moisturisers that contain retinoids, AHAs, BHAs, micro beads or enzymes will continue to further exfoliate the skin.

Over exfoliating can cause the skin to hyperpigment (excess pigmentation), and become red, dry and flaky.

Allow seven days post-dermaplaning before you use any exfoliating products.

4. Cleanse with a gentle cleanser.

Use a gentle cleanser to avoid any irritation to the skin.

The skin may feel slightly tender after your first treatment.

As previously mentioned, the epidermis layer of cells have been removed and must be treated with more care.

5. Do not touch or pick at the skin.

The cells of the skin are all connected together by something called desmosomes. When you pick at one piece of skin, it is linked to another.

Picking at the skin can cause the removal of fresh skin cells before they are ready to shed. The risk of damage is increased - so please keep your hands and fingers off your face (also our hands are full of bacteria!)

6. Avoid introducing any new products to the skin for the initial 72 hours.

You do not know how your skin might be react to a new product. This is not the time to be testing out new skincare. Again we can over-work the skin and it could take a negative response which we don’t want.

Please stick to the products you know your skin loves. Follow just a simple skincare routine for the first seven days to allow your skin to settle and rebuild those cells back healthily.

7. Keep the skin well hydrated!

Dermaplaning can be a drying treatment for some skin types. It is important within those first seven days to keep you skin hydrated.

Towards the end of your dermaplaning facial we will apply our ‘Tier for Teens Moisture’, it is a natural, non-greasy moisturiser which aids healing and reduces inflammation.

We stock ’Tier for Teens Moisture’ in salon and we would recommend to use this post-treatment for hydrated, soft skin. It's available for purchase HERE

8. Makeup!

For the initial 24 hours post dermaplaning, we would recommend to avoid wearing any makeup (unless it is completely necessary and has to be 100% mineral based).

After this period, makeup application is super fun, particularly if you are extra fuzzy!

Most people find they need less makeup after this treatment, and it doesn’t look cakey. Powder and coverage apply smoothly and it doesn’t get trapped in any hair. Amazing!
